Give yourself a big hand!

If you’re waiting for an email from me on how to make your donation or what to do next, I will have those all out in the next couple of days.  It’s been an overwhelming month, but in a good way.  If I find any other ways to support the quake and tsunami survivors, I will post it here. How are we doing?

Kidlit4Japan has raised a total $9,394 for Japan through the end of bidding yesterday afternoon. Thanks for your help, your generosity, and your patience when I fell behind a bit in correspondence.

A final push for Buy It Now items will continue until Friday at 4PM.  These items are generally marked at a minimum bid of 50% of the estimated value, but feel free to pledge more.

UPDATE: We’re at $9,914 with less than 5 hours left to go on “Buy It Now” items. Can we crack $10,000?

#Kidlit4Japan Auction #117 from Ellen Booraem

Auction #117: Signed hardcover of SMALL PERSONS WITH WINGS and paperback of THE UNNAMEABLES from Ellen Booraem

Image provided by donorDescription: SMALL PERSONS WITH WINGS is the story of a snarky 13-year-old endangered by the equally snarky fairies with whom her family has an ancient pact. In a starred review (one of three!), Publishers Weekly described it as “wistful, humorous, and clever.” THE UNNAMEABLES is about a modern-day island whose isolated culture has become strictly utilitarian, a boy who secretly makes art, and a magical creature who helps him shake things up. Kirkus Reviews deemed it a Best Book of 2008, calling it “an ever-surprising, genre-defying page-turner,” and it was an ALA Best Book for Young Adults. Both books are for ages nine and older.

Estimated Value: $24

I will provide a detailed letter along with many in-text comments, looking at story structure (this holds true for non-fiction as well as fiction), plot, character, appeal, and language usage. #Kidlit4Japan Auction #115a from Ann Manheimer

Auction #115a: A signed copy of Martin Luther King, Jr.: Dreaming of Equality from Ann Manheimer

Description: The winner of this auction will receive a signed copy of Martin Luther King, Jr.: Dreaming of Equality, designated a Notable Social Studies Trade Book for Young People by the NCSS and CBC. Here’s how one reviewer described the book:

Readers will feel like they are sitting in King’s congregation or marching by his side to protest injustices because his voice resonates throughout this biography. Beginning with King’s childhood in Atlanta’s Sweet Auburn neighborhood, his family and faith shaped him. King risked his personal comfort and safety to seek equality and tolerance for everyone and pursue ending segregation and discrimination. His wife, Coretta Scott King, and children supported him despite bombings, threats, and his imprisonments. Manheimer does not shy from telling unflattering aspects of King’s life and describing the hate, violence, and harassment he endured, ending in his assassination. King suffered exhaustion and despair but continued his work, which ultimately changed laws. This biography is based on solid historical sources, both primary and secondary, listed in the bibliography. Manheimer recognizes contributions of overlooked Civil Rights heroines. A document section provides portions of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and Claudette Colvin’s court testimony regarding her resisting bus segregation prior to the Montgomery Bus Boycott. Carolrhoda/Lerner, Ages 10 up.

— Elizabeth D. Schafer – Children’s Literature

#Kidlit4Japan Auction Daily Preview: Friday 4/8 (Last New Items!)

When I first had the idea of creating my own auction to benefit the victims of the Japan earthquake, the first person I contacted was Holly Thompson. Holly is a longtime resident of Japan and currently serves as Regional Advisor for SCBWI Tokyo. She was able to give me some idea of what was happening on the ground and where our efforts might make the greatest impact. One of the last items in the auction is a copy of Holly’s novel-in-verse which is set in Japan and will be shipped from Japan to the winning bidder.

The very last item up for bid, and grand finale of the Kidlit4Japan auction, is a very special package of picture books from PaperTigers.org, a website devoted to multicultural books from around the world for children and young adults, with a particular focus on the Pacific Rim and South Asia.

Bidding on today’s items will continue until next Wednesday, and Buy It Now items will close at 4PM on Friday, April 15th. Thanks to everyone for your help over the past three weeks!

–Greg

#Kidlit4Japan Auction Daily Preview: Thursday 4/7 (Penultimate Edition)

This is the 14th day of items out of 15 days total. If you haven’t seen anything worth bidding on so far, you haven’t been looking!

With auction numbers now in triple digits, you might think it would be hard for our generous donors to come up with items that truly stand out–but they have.

For example, we’ve been blessed with some really great critique options so far but maybe you’ve been holding out for a specialist in genre fantasy. Auction #112 from Caitlin Kittredge might be for you!

Or you might feel less confident in the synopsis of your novel than in the manuscript itself–in which case, check out Auction #108 for a novel synopsis critique from Esther Hershenhorn.

Finally, we’ve had lots of author visits up for auction so far, but only Michelle Cusolito is offering to guide a class on a field trip in Auction #110!

Our total so far is $6,848. Let’s make it another great day to raise money for Japan!

–Greg

#Kidlit4Japan Auction #97 from Stacy Whitman

Auction #97: An ARC from Tu’s first season from Stacy Whitman

Description: The winner of this auction will get to choose an advance reader’s copy (ARC) of one Tu’s first three books, to be published Fall 2011. The ARCs will be available in early summer 2011. Choose between Galaxy Games: The Challengers by Greg Fishbone, Wolf Mark by Joseph Bruchac, or Tankborn by Karen Sandler.

Tankborn, by Karen Sandler

Image provided by donorBest friends Kayla and Mishalla know they will be separated when the time comes for their Assignments. They are GENs, Genetically Engineered Non-humans, and in their strict caste system, GENs are at the bottom rung of society. High-status trueborns and working-class lowborns, born naturally of a mother, are free to choose their own lives. But GENs are gestated in a tank, sequestered in slums, and sent to work as slaves as soon as they reach age fifteen.
When Kayla is Assigned to care for Zul Manel, the patriarch of a trueborn family, she finds a host of secrets and surprises—not least of which is her unexpected friendship with Zul’s great-grandson. Meanwhile, the children that Mishalla is Assigned to care for are being stolen in the middle of the night. With the help of an intriguing lowborn boy, Mishalla begins to suspect that something horrible is happening to them.

After weeks of toiling in their Assignments, mystifying circumstances enable Kayla and Mishalla to reunite. Together they hatch a plan with their new friends to save the children who are disappearing. Yet can GENs really trust humans? Both girls must put their lives and hearts at risk to crack open a sinister conspiracy, one that may reveal secrets no one is ready to face.

Wolf Mark, by Joseph Bruchac

Image provided by donorLuke King knows a lot of things. Like four different ways to disarm an enemy before the attacker can take a breath. Like every detail of every book he’s ever read. And Luke knows enough—just enough—about what his father does as a black ops infiltrator to know which questions not to ask. Like why does his family move around so much?

Luke just hopes that this time his family is settled for a while. He’ll finally be able to have a normal life. He’ll be able to ask the girl he likes to take a ride with him on his motorcycle. He’ll hang out with his friends. He’ll be invisible—just as he wants.

But when his dad goes missing, Luke realizes that life will always be different for him. Suddenly he must avoid the kidnappers looking to use him as leverage against his father, while at the same time evading the attention of the school’s mysterious elite clique of Russian hipsters, who seem much too interested in Luke’s own personal secret. Faced with multiple challenges and his emerging paranormal identity, Luke must decide who to trust as he creates his own destiny.

Galaxy Games: The Challengers, by Greg R. Fishbone

Image provided by donorThings are looking up for Tyler Sato (literally!) as he and his friends scan the night sky for a star named for him by his Tokyo cousins in honor of his eleventh birthday. Ordinary stars tend to stay in one place, but Ty’s seems to be streaking directly toward Earth at an alarming rate. Soon the whole world is talking about TY SATO, the doomsday asteroid, and life is turned upside down for Ty Sato, the boy, who would rather be playing hoops in his best friend’s driveway.

Meanwhile, aboard a silver spaceship heading for Earth, M’Frozza, a girl with three eyes and five nose holes, is on a secret mission. M’Frozza is the captain of planet Mrendaria’s Galaxy Games team, and she is desperate to save her world from a dishonorable performance in the biggest sporting event in the universe.
What will happen when Ty meets M’Frozza? Get ready for the most important event in human history—it’s off the backboard, around the rim, and out of this world!

With Roz and Eva everything becomes a contest—who can snag the best role in the school play, have the cutest boyfriend, pull off the craziest prank. Still, they’re as close as sisters can be. Until Eva deletes Roz from her life like so much junk e-mail for no reason that Roz understands. Now Eva hangs out with the annoyingly petite cheerleaders, and Roz fantasizes about slipping bovine growth hormone into their Gatorade.
Roz has a suspicion about Eva. In turn, Eva taunts Roz with a dare, which leads to an act of total insanity. Drama geeks clamor for attention, Shakespearean insults fly, and Roz steals the show in Lauren Bjorkman’s hilarious debut novel.

#Kidlit4Japan Auction #89 from Ann Haywood Leal

Auction #89: Two signed, middle-grade novels by Ann Haywood Leal; ALSO KNOWN AS HARPER and A FINDERS-KEEPERS PLACE from Ann Haywood Leal

Image provided by donorDescription: 1. ALSO KNOWN AS HARPER by Ann Haywood Leal: Harper Lee Morgan is an aspiring poet, which isn’t surprising, seeing as how she’s named after her mama’s favorite writer, Harper Lee. And life is giving her a lot to write about just now. Daddy up and walked out, leaving them broke. Then Harper’s family gets evicted.
With Mama scrambling to find work, Harper has to skip school to care for her little brother, Hemingway. Their lives have been turned upside down, which Harper could just about handle—if it wasn’t for the writing contest at school. If only she could get up on that stage and read her poems out loud . . .
2) A FINDERS-KEEPERS PLACE by Ann Haywood Leal: Esther Page has been trying to keep things together for as long as she can remember. Valley—that’s her mama—has always gotten funny notions like gardening indoors or living as the Amish do, without any electricity. And Esther has always cleaned up after those notions and watched our for her little sister, Ruth.
But Valley’s notions are getting wilder, and too many people are asking questions about what’s going on at home. It seems to Esther that the only person who can help is Ezekiel—the father she can barely remember.
Ezekiel was a preacher, that much is certain, so Esther takes Ruth on a search through all the churches in town. Somebody, somewhere, must know about Ezekiel . . .

She doesn’t want new friends, or palm trees, or a warm breeze. She wants her old friends. She wants her old home. She wants things the way they used to be. How will she remember her new classmates’ names? Who will she play with at recess? How will she ever feel at home in this new place? Then the teacher introduces Carol Ann to the term, “aloha.” She says the little word means “hello,” “welcome,” and a lot more. Carol Ann finds out for herself just how much “aloha” means as she makes a place for herself at her new school.

#Kidlit4Japan Auction Daily Preview: Friday, 3/31 (65th Anniversary Edition)

Sorry if I’ve been slow to respond over the past couple of days—I’m fighting off a fever that has me pinned down to the bed for much of the day.

As the devastating and deadly force of tsunamis is on all our minds these days, it’s a good time to remember another Pacific tidal wave that struck exactly 65 years ago today. The Aleutian Islands Tsunami of 1946 caused deaths in Alaska and Hawaii and prompted the creation of the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center. That is the topic of Auction item #73, signed copies of Gail Langer Karwoski’s Tsunami: The True Story of an April Fool’s Day Disaster, our featured item of the day and an excellent way to introduce young readers to the topic.

Carry on, I’m going back to bed.

–Greg

#Kidlit4Japan Auction Daily Preview: Tuesday 3/29 ($2800 raised so far)

Last week, it rained here in the Boston area. The rain tested positive for radioactive particles that most probably originated from failing nuclear reactors in Japan. They say there’s no health risk here, but it does go to prove that the world is smaller than we imagine and we are all connected to events in other places.

After three days of closing items, we have raised $2,800 for UNICEF and Save the Children. Thanks for your bids and for helping to get the word out.

–Greg

Kidlit4Japan Auction #38 from A.C.E. Bauer

Auction #38: Signed first edition copies of two A.C.E. Bauer’s middle grade novels and one audio production (5-CD set). from A.C.E. Bauer

Image provided by donorDescription:

  1. A signed first edition hardcover copy of the middle grade novel COME FALL by A.C.E. Bauer, published in 2010 by Random House Children’s Books. It tells the story of a friendship between three kids on the fringes of the middle school social order who become pawns in a game of jealous one-upmanship between Oberon and Titania, the King and Queen of Faery. Loosely based on the changeling’s tale in Shakespeare’s A MIDSUMMER NIGHT’S DREAM, this is a story of magical intervention in the least magical of settings: a public middle school. COME FALL received a starred review from PUBLISHERS WEEKLY, and was placed on the on the CCBC Choices 2011 for best books for children published in 2010.
  2. A signed first edition hardcover copy of the middle grade novel NO CASTLES HERE by A.C.E. Bauer, published in 2007 by Random House Children’s Book. It tells the story of a bullied 11-year-old boy who finds respect with the help of the meanest teacher in school, a mentor from the Big Brothers program who is gay, and the last of the fairy godmothers. NO CASTLES HERE received a starred review from KIRKUS REVIEWS, and is on the 2009 ALA Rainbow List.
